6 Tips to cultivate an abundance mindset

Here's the deal: fear is a natural emotion that warns of potential threats. It's a survival mechanism that was useful for our ancestors. However, in today's world, our chronic scarcity thinking and fear response hinder us from reaching our potential. So, how can we nurture an abundance mindset? Keep reading!

IT BEGINS WITHIN

Cultivating abundance never happens externally - it always begins within. We have to embody abundance to live, create, design, and become the abundant beings we desire to be.

Stephen Covey wrote about “abundance mentality” i.e. abundance mindset in his best-seller, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Mr. Covey defined the abundance mentality as the concept in which a person believes there are enough resources and successes to share with others. The abundance mindset flows out of a deep inner sense of personal worth and security. In contrast, scarcity mindset is described as the concept in which if someone else wins or is successful, then you lose.

The benefits of an abundance mindset

According to an article on Chopra.com, the benefits of having an abundance mindset includes:

  • Living an unlimited, full, and satisfying life

  • Exuding happiness despite circumstance

  • Giving and receiving affections and items of high value with ease

  • Feeling plentiful, creative, and inspired

  • Taking full advantage of and enjoying opportunities that come to you

  • Creating memorable and meaningful life experiences

  • Feeling secure and confident in your life endeavors

As you can see, cultivating an abundance mindset has a positive effect on our emotional well-beings, physical health, relationships, happiness, and financial decisions…to name a handful. With the six tips below, you can successfully keep scarcity mindset at bay and thrive with an abundance mindset…starting today!

BRING AWARENESS TO YOUR THOUGHTS

Your thoughts create your reality. Are your thoughts based in fear and scarcity? If so, what do you need to think to shift your scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset? One of my favorite tools to do this is to reframe my thoughts! For example: “I don't have enough money" can be reframed to “Money constantly flows into my life." Ensure you make your new thoughts kind, true, and helpful!

notice the stories you tell yourself

What you tell yourself and the people around you, shapes your reality. Are you sharing stories rooted in scarcity or abundance? Ask yourself what language shifts you want to make to turn your scarcity-based stories into ones that reflect positivity, opportunities, etc. Mindsets are contagious, so choose to invest your time in building a community of people who elevate your outlook on life, too.

PRACTICE GRATITUDE

Gratitude is a powerful emotion for creating abundance and it's one of the best tools we have access to (that is free!). Every day, write or say out loud three things (or more) that you're grateful for. As Oprah Winfrey says, “If you look at what you have in life, you will always have more. If you look at what you don’t have in life, you will never have enough.” Practicing gratitude is a game-changer!!

USE AFFIRMATIONS

Affirmations are great at getting you out of scarcity thinking. I love the “I am” app for affirmation notifications when I need it most. I also recommend practicing affirmations in the mirror, while looking at yourself. Speak kindly to yourself and notice all of the wonderful qualities that are unique to you (even your “flaws”). Write affirmations on post-it notes, and place them around the house for you to see.

TRY AN ABUNDANCE JOURNAL

At the top of the page write “Dear Universe/God/Source/Self" and follow with all of the abundant actions, outcomes, thoughts, and feelings that you want to have in your life, as if they have already occurred. For example: “Dear Universe, thank you so much for the abundance of new client referrals. I love getting paid for my expertise. I welcome more of this or something even better!"

CELEBRATE YOUR WINS, OFTEN

Write down at least ONE thing you're proud of yourself for daily in a notebook/journal. This helps boost your confidence, which makes you feel good about yourself and ultimately translates into how you think about yourself and your life! We often focus on what we didn't get done or “failed” at, so this shift of focusing on what you DID do is powerful for cultivating an abundance mindset.
