“Mindfulness is an elevated state of being that enables you to rise above your circumstances and experience a sense of joy. As you experience joy, you attract health, finances, abundance and a slew of other wonderful things into your life.” - Yesenia Chavan

joy is not just found in the big moments

Joy is not just found in the big moments, but in the small moments too. And in order to experience joy in the small moments, we must be present. We must check in with ourselves. We must ask ourselves what we really need. We must be in the here and now with our thoughts so we can cultivate the emotions we desire to experience.

an every day example

Let’s use an example that most of us encounter every day: making dinner. Many of us rush through dinner, halfway paying attention to what we’re doing as if we're on auto-pilot, feeling anxious or thinking about all the things we have to do after we eat dinner…like helping our kids with homework, tidying the house, writing that last email, or sending over a work proposal.

Take that same scenario, but infuse joy and mindfulness into it to make the dinner experience that more special. For example, we could ask Alexa to play our favorite playlist, sip a glass of wine or mocktail, savor the fresh aromas, take pleasure in dicing and slicing fresh veggies, or dance with your partner, dog, or kids while dinner is on the stove.

These are the same exact circumstances, but totally different experiences.

It’s all in our perception

At the end of the day, the message is simple: It’s all in how we choose to see what we’re doing. Joy is not dependent on what’s happening around us, rather it’s an internal energy shift…a way of approaching our lives…finding small moments of delight, play, fun, laughter, etc.

And there is good reason to choose all of that. When we experience joy regularly, and bring a mindful approach to our lives, studies show we actually build bigger brains and stimulate neuronal growth, and hormonal and emotional changes that support our well beings.

Let’s personalize this journey

So now an invitation for you to reflect, bring more awareness to your life, and cultivate joy today. Here are some questions to get you started:

  • What does joy mean to you (what is your personal definition)?

  • When was the last time you experienced joy? What was it about that moment?

  • What types activities or hobbies bring you joy?

  • Who in your life do you feel most joyful around?

  • Do you feel your life is devoid of joy at the moment? If so, why is that?

  • What might need to change for you to step into a more joyful life?

  • What small, imperfect action could you take this week to move the needle on your joy factor?

And here's a challenge for you this week: take a small, imperfect action step forward towards joy. Embrace imperfections, savor the present, and let mindfulness be your guide. Start your day with gratitude, infuse laughter into conversations, and find joy in the tiniest details.
